STEM was launched in August 2013 at the Rochester Chapter of AAUW (the American Association of University Women). The STEM initiative was launched to address local and regional challenges and opportunities in the STEM arena. We offer a collaborative platform to individuals and organizations dedicated to advancing STEM education and careers for all people, and in particular, women, girls, and minorities. This interest group is open to people from all backgrounds, and not just scientists or engineers. We develop new programs, new ideas, and new collaborations to build the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists. We are dedicated to this cause because while our dependence as a society on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics continues to increase, the number of girls and women, especially minorities, pursuing STEM degrees remains disappointingly and dangerously low.
